In our pursuit to making rights real, we bring to you our plans and activities for the week. This is done, in so that the public, media and our partners are always aware of our cases and advocacy activities. We hope that this is not only informative but encourages everyone to contribute towards our goal, which is making rights real.

The Socio Economic Rights project will be doing follow-up training with Civil Society Organisations and Community Advice Offices in Johannesburg and Pretoria this week (13 March 2018 in JHB, Parktonian Hotel); (14 March 2018 in Pta – Protea Capital Hotel) as part of the EU ESCR project on enhancing legal advocacy on socio-economic rights.

The Gender Equality Programme will attend a pre-trial hearing in the Cape Town High Court, in the matter of September v Subramoney and Others. In this matter, our client is taking on the South African prison system for direct and indirect discrimination against transgender prisoners. We will also attend the “Feminism Is” book launch, which contains written contributions by many of our partners and colleagues, such as Kathleen Dey fromm the Rape Crisis Cape Town Trust.
The Strategic Litigation Programme is expecting judgement on the matter South African History Archive v South African Reserve Bank. Our Musina Office will be conducting a 3 day workshop (from the 13th to the 15th of March 2018) on the “Protection , Assistance to Vulnerable Migrants in Mixed Migration Flows
This is a joint venture between IOM, UNHCR and LHR. LHR will be putting emphasis on the concept of Human Rights, both internationally and in the regional. We will also use this opportunity to look at issues around Statelessness in South Africa.

On Wednesday, the Hate Crimes Bill will finally be submitted to parliament, after sustained pressure by the Hate Crime Working Group, including a 21 519 signature petition in partnership with All Out. The petition, which has already been delivered to the Minister of Justice, will again be delivered at parliament on Tuesday, ahead of the cabinet meeting. Follow #HateCrimesBill for updates.
The Environmental Rights Programme will be participating at the South African Human Rights Commission’s Business and Human Rights Dialogue on 14 March in a panel entitled: Business and Community Engagement

Friday is the deadline for comments on the draft national Minimum Wage Bill, and the Gender Equality programme will be making joint submissions with the Shukumisa Care Work Programme on the low wages and unique circumstances of people providing social care services – including, but not limited to post-rape care, shelters for abused women and children, mental health services, and many more.
